Ayurveda (Ah-Yur- Veda) literally means "science of life span". It is the natural system of healing and of improving quality of life. It has been practiced for over 6,000 years in India. It is recognized by the World health organization as an effective traditional health care system.
In Ayurveda, the physical body is the gateway to what is commonly called “the quantum mechanical body”, which is the underlying basis for everything we are, thoughts, emotions, proteins, cells, tissues, organs – any visible or invisible aspects of ourselves.
Ayurvedic theory states that all imbalances and diseases in the body begin with an imbalance or stress in the awareness or consciousness of the individual. The mind exerts a deep influence on the body, and healing depends on contacting awareness, bringing it into harmony and balance, then extending this to the body.
Ayurvedic science is based on the premise that the higher intelligence of our body is the ultimate and supreme genius, which reflects the wisdom of the universe.
Ayurveda aims to treat the person and the disease at its source, rather than merely pacifying or masking the symptoms. The first approach is – Who is the person? Every person has a unique individual constitution known as psycho-physiological body type or the mind-body type, which is like a blue print outlining the innate tendencies that have been built into one’s system.
Ayurveda discusses all physical and emotional manifestations of disease due to the imbalance of the three basic physiological governing principals in the body, called doshas – Vata, Pitta and Kapha. They are responsible for the thousands of mental and physical processes in everyone. Ayurveda attempts to establish balance between them for optimal health.
Vata is concerned with the nervous system; it governs the movements like breathing and blood circulation. It can be put as impulses traveling along the nerves, muscles, blood vessels, wherever there is motion from a molecule to a thought.
Pitta regulates the heat of body, metabolism, energy production, and other biochemical reactions and transformations. Awareness of sight and sharp thinking are also Pitta functions.
Kapha governs physical substance and fluid balance as well as the structural basis of the body and stability of mind to function coherently.
