The main objectives of acupuncture are:
How on earth do the needles work in Acupuncture?
Modern theories of acupuncture are based on the laboratory research conducted in the past 40 years. Acupuncture points have been found to have certain electrical properties, and stimulation of these points has been shown to alter the chemical neurotransmitters in the body.
What are the needle treatments like? Are they painful?
Medical hypodermic needles are stiff, hollow and thick for forcing liquid into the patient’s flesh, usually an uncomfortable, if not painful, procedure.
Acupuncture needles are fine and flexible, no thicker than a human hair or piece of thread. Deftly inserted into an accupoint by a skilled acupuncturist, the slender needle produces little or no sensation at all.
Besides needles, what are other treatment options?
While needle treatment is traditional, there are other effective means of bringing about the desired physiological response including: acupressure (finger pressure), blunt probes, pressure massage, electronic stimulation, laser, heat, cold, ultrasound, moxibustion, and/or herbal therapy.
How long do treatments take?
Depending on patient’s condition and treatment plan, each treatment averages thirty minutes.
Are acupuncture needles sterile and safe?
Yes. The government requires acupuncturists to follow strict sterilization procedures. In addition, pre-sterilized acupuncture needles are manufactured, packaged and shipped in sterilized containers to ensure compliance with the law.
How many treatments and how often?
Because each patient’s health issues and response to treatment are unique, the number and frequency of treatments vary. Typically, the recommendation is two to four treatments per week for eight to sixteen treatments, although some patients respond favorably to one or two treatments. Some patients may not respond until the eighth or ninth visit.
